How to take your Measurements and know your Size

When I take orders, “What size are you?” is an inevitable question to ask. Sometimes I get answers like “I don’t know” or “I used to be a size 12 now am not sure” or “Let me ask my tailor”.

What you don’t know is that it is as simple as knowing what to wear in the morning. I know. It’s a struggle for some of us too right? It’s not that simple, am just kidding.

This will be useful especially if you are shopping online or just to know for the sake of it

So here are simple measures to take:

  • The best thing to wear when taking your measurements is your undies. Yes, or at least anything not thick like a vest or leggings. Do not wear cardigans or belts or anything that will add volumes to your body.
  • Make sure you wear a Bra. Never take your measurements or anybody’s own without asking them to put on a bra. Most times, the figure you get when you are wearing a bra is different from that of when you are not wearing one.
  • If you wear body magic, those waist trainers or thigh trimmers. Make sure you put them on too before taking your measurement too. If not, you will have a much bigger fit when you wear the cloth you ordered or made.
  • Make sure you are not wearing heels. Heels will add unnecessary length to your height but if the clothing you want to buy has needs for it, then you can wear one but its always best to measure yourself without them. Then you can decide how much of the extra length you will like.

So having these in mind, let’s get down to business

Depending on the piece of clothing you are buying, there are different measurements but we will concentrate on the basic which is a dress and trousers/pants. You should know that a top/ blouse and skirt measurement is part of the dress measurement while a short is part of the trouser/pants measurement. The only difference here is the length.

We need only

  • Bust
  • Waist
  • Hip
  • Inseam

This is how you take your measurements.

Bust – Measure the bust at the fullest part. Measure all around the body that is total circumference.

Waist – Measure the waist where the body bends. It helps to bend side to side to identify exactly where to measure.its the narrowest part of the torso. some people call it “shape” too. that’s the circumference you measure.

Hip – Measure the hips at the fullest part. I usually roll my measuring tape across the high hip to the mid hip and then the lower hip. Then I determine my highest value.

how to measure

Inseam – Your inseam runs from your crotch down through your leg to your ankle. By measuring your inseam, you can ensure your pants will be the perfect length. You can measure your inseam yourself, but it’s best to get help from someone else if you can.

Once you have determined these values, its time to compare your measurements to the size chart.
